So I like to keep track of my old stopping grounds in Oregon and every now and then I get the OHA report. Once again The Sage Grouse is the hot topic with environmentalists and wildlife departments, the continued decline (or not) no one really seems to know, but you can bet there is big money involved so the OHA seems to want to get involved, we need studies, reports, graphics, charts, ect. It goes on and on, and I can see this coming from the ODFW these guys are little puppets doing the Gov. bidding, but the OHA is a non- profit?
So in my travels across the deserts of Nv. And Ore. I see allot stuff some pretty crazy most is just nature working on its own like it has from the beginning and being a coyote hunter I see allot of dead sage grouse, dead nests and left over eggs, I have shot coyotes with feathers in their mouths and watch them chase them down in the brush. So liking to be sarcastic I make a post saying ( there’s plenty of water, plenty of food and plenty of land, oh and there is also plenty of coyotes.) Immediately I get a response. (There's plenty of habitat in terms of land, but juniper encroachment, catastrophic range fires and other factors have degraded it for sage-grouse. Identifying areas that area used as leks and nesting grounds will help protect those locations and the travel corridors between them and avoid fragmenting the habitat.). now this is the typical bureaucrat
response but I found this odd coming from OHA thread.
my response was (that’s all fine and good but the coyote is killing sage grouse by the 1000's before there even hatched) and the response was (Parker Crew do you have data to support that?) Yes we need data, tests, studies, more graphics, some studies from other country’s, OMG.
Now I am not an educated college man, my classroom was the forests of central Oregon 1960s my dad packed me around in a back pack while he worked as a logger, and taught me the laws of nature, he explained the food chain to me and how it worked, taught me how to maintain a healthy herd of deer and elk, and those laws are still working they never change the laws of nature only adapt to new conditions and continue on regardless of man’s attempts to alter it to his will lol.
I was never going to reach this guy since he must have a doctorate degree of some kind, I would bet my arm he has never even thought that a coyote would or even or could kill a sage grouse or would like eating eggs from a nest.
The keen sense of smell of the coyote offers it an easy meal just by keeping its nose in the wind it can smell a sage grouse nest a mile downwind do I have any data? Hell yes I have common sense, years of living in and watching nature, and I have 13 years of shooting coyotes and watching them in their natural state, is the coyote the only thing killing the sage grouse (no) man himself probably kills more than anything.
My point is we have allowed educated idiots to run our Gov. depts. those that have never even considered the fact that the coyote is a killing machine only have to look at the wolf introduction to see that their efforts to be fair and not hurt anyone’s feelings is a load of crap, these creatures have no feelings they don’t think and being fair lol what a joke. The OHA has never been anything I would join I know they do some good work, but please STOP THE INSANITY.
We now know that the coyote is killing our young deer and antelope in record numbers the stats are staggering but we need more data, we need tests, studies, graphics and more money, it would just be to simple to put a bounty on the coyote keep in check and give the dam bird a chance to hatch some eggs?
Oh hell what I know anyway.
